Can I use a desktop e-mail client from off campus to access my UW-Platteville e-mail?
The Office of Information Technology recommends students and faculty use the UWP Zimbra web client to access their e-mail from off campus.
If you wish to use a desktop e-mail client from off campus, please note that support will be limited (Level II) due to numerous network configurations that can impact mail delivery from remote networks. It is common for other networks to restrict mail sending to only their own e-mail servers, or setup other limits on the sending of e-mail. These practices are used to increase security and reduce SPAM problems. If you wish to send mail using your @uwplatt.edu account, OIT no longer recommends that you setup your e-mail client to send using your ISP's SMTP server.
To send and receive UW-Platteville e-mail from off campus, you will need to configure your desktop e-mail client to use a secure connection for both sending (SMTP) and receiving (IMAP) e-mail. This is configured within your e-mail client under the server settings. Use the UW-Platteville e-mail server addresses and select SSL for a secure connection. Please also verify the port for SMTP is set to 465, and the port for IMAP is set to 993.
Note that sending UW-Platteville e-mail from off campus without configuring your e-mail client to use the UW-Platteville SMTP server with SSL enabled may not work, meaning your messages may not be delivered.
