Undergraduate Research

Each semester, dozens of undergraduates in the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture take part in academic research. This allows students to put the concepts they learn in the classroom into practice, all while building a resume for their future career or graduate school applications. The results of this research is recognized and celebrated locally and across the country, often providing benefits for the greater Platteville community as well. Joseph Creanza, a junior soil and crop science major at UW-Platteville earned first place at the 2020 Student Research and Innovation Showcase for his project, “Plant Essential Oils as Natural and Safe Pesticides for the Control of Soybean White Mold Disease.” The event featured 15 students from across the UW System and was sponsored by WiSys, an independent, nonprofit organization that advances scientific research throughout the University of Wisconsin System by assisting with grants, patents and licensing processes.

Documenting rarely seen species

Students and faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville are researching an animal that some Platteville residents might be surprised to learn they have in their own backyard – the southern flying squirrel. Biology students Nick Nelson and Jack Rasmussen have been documenting roost sites and determining the home range of flying squirrels, as well as investigating their movement and behavior patterns. With the groundwork laid, biology professor Dr. Jeffrey Huebschman will work with new groups of students each semester to continue this important research.

Pioneers showcase leadership

Four University of Wisconsin-Platteville students recently presented “Plarn,” or “Plastic Yarn,” at the National Society of Leadership and Success’ annual conference at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California, including junior business administration major Caroline Norman and senior agriculture education major Ashley Blevins. Plarn is created by collecting, folding, cutting and stringing together plastic shopping bags. When finished, the strands of plastic are donated to groups that will crochet them into mats. These mats are then distributed to homeless individuals in the Milwaukee area.
