Why study Criminal Justice and Forensic investigation abroad?

For students interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice or forensic investigation, the college years are the perfect time to broaden horizons by learning about political systems around the world. By incorporating an international experience in a UW-Platteville degree, students are able to compare and contrast systems of justice around the world, challenge themselves by learning about alternative approaches to familiar problems, and return with a fresh perspective on the criminal system in the United States.

Whether participating on a program specifically targeted for the field of criminal justice and forensic investigation or not, students should keep their eyes and ears open on the following issues: How is immigration dealt with in the host culture? What are the procedures and rights of criminals? What is the structure of the courts? How do politics and the media shape these institutions or the opinions about these institutions?

Upon graduation, having international experience on a resume can also help distinguish applicants in the competitive job market.  It can help demonstrate a global perspective of the field and real-world issues, flexibility and adaptability, and knowledge of and openness to other cultures.

The Department of Criminal Justice has not identified any recommended programs for their students.  Students can ask their academic advisors if they have any recommended programs and/or courses based on their personal or other advisees' experiences abroad.
