UW-Platteville's Collaborative Program continues success

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville College of Engineering Mathematics and Science faculty and staff joined UW Colleges representatives to discuss the successes and future of the collaborative engineering program.
The UW Colleges, a network of 13 two-year campuses, has been collaborating with UW-Platteville for nearly 10 years, preparing place-bound students from across Wisconsin for engineering degrees.
“Bringing UW-Platteville and UW Colleges together, we look at opportunities for sharing resources. We also look at opportunities for serving our students and better serving industry,” said Dr. Bill Hudson, Dean of the College of EMS at UW-Platteville.
The goals of the meeting were to become better acquainted with and building relationships between all of the programs offered through UW-Platteville’s College of EMS and UW Colleges faculty.
“This program gives us an opportunity to reach across the state with engineering without building additional infrastructure,” said Dr. Lisa Riedle, UW-Platteville associate dean of the College of EMS. “We have resources on our other 13 campuses that we can utilize if we partner.”
Currently, the collaborative engineering program offers mechanical and electrical engineering. UW-Platteville is looking to extend those programs to include industrial, civil, environmental engineering and engineering physics or any of the eight engineering disciplines currently offered at UW-Platteville.
Christa James-Byrnes, UW Colleges engineering coordinator, stated that by partnering with UW-Platteville, each one of the colleges now has expansive opportunities.
Typically, students in the collaborative engineering program partake in math, science and pre-engineering courses at the UW Colleges, then participate in UW-Platteville professional engineering courses online.
Students attending UW-Fox Valley and UW-Rock County attend classes taught by UW-Platteville faculty in a traditional classroom setting while students located on other UW College campuses take courses via streaming video technology.
If the course includes a laboratory component, UW-Platteville selected faculty members meet with students at the UW College campuses on a regularly scheduled basis to facilitate the required laboratory work.
“UW-Platteville can now reach out without the large expense of infrastructure and curriculum development,” said Riedle.
Through the collaborative engineering program, in sending streaming video courses, faculty facilitating lab work, and proctoring exams on the various UW College campuses, UW-Platteville has also launched an operation called Virtual Desktop to assist UW-Platteville on-campus and collaborative students in obtaining required computer applications used in the required engineering courses.
“We used to ship out laptops and install all of the computer programs like AutoCAD, but as of last fall semester, collaborative students can now log on to a virtual desktop and have all these computer applications available to download anywhere and use via their personal computer or other device,” said Michael Sherer, UW-Platteville deputy chief information officer.
