UW-Platteville student nominated for UWS Board of Regents
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. —Gov. Scott Walker announced today the appointment of Chad Landes to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. Landes will be replacing Katie Pointer, whose term expired on May 1.
Landes is a UW-Platteville student majoring in animal science. As a UW-Platteville Agriculture Ambassador, Landes travels to high schools across the Midwest to recruit students for UW-Platteville’s School of Agriculture.
"Being nominated for the UW System Board of Regents is a great honor, and we are proud that Chad Landes has been chosen to represent all the UW System students,” UW-Platteville Chancellor Dennis J. Shields said. “Chad is an animal science major who has attained academic honors while also being involved in many agricultural extra-curricular activities. He epitomizes the hands-on learning we stress at UW-Platteville and will be a fine representative to the Board of Regents."
In addition to his service at UW-Platteville, Landes is a volunteer snowmobile safety instructor and an active member of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs. He was the keynote speaker at the 2012 International Snowmobile Congress in Boston, Mass. Upon graduation in May 2014, he plans to attend the UW School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison, Wis. Landes is a Dane, Wis, native and a Waunakee High School graduate.
“Chad’s strong spirit of service and volunteerism makes him a great fit for the Board of Regents,” Walker said.
The Board of Regents is responsible for establishing policies and rules for governing the UW System, planning to meet future state needs for collegiate education, setting admission standards and policies, reviewing and approving university budgets, and establishing the regulatory framework within which the individual units are allowed to operate with as great a degree of autonomy as possible. Board members attend eight regular meetings per year, serve on special committees, serve as liaisons with at least two UW institutions and perform related duties.
"I'm really excited to join the Board of Regents and to represent the students of the University of Wisconsin System," Landes said. "I'm especially excited to provide an agricultural perspective to the board."
The UW System Board of Regents is an 18-member board. The governor of Wisconsin appoints 14 citizen members and two student members to serve seven-year terms and two-year terms, respectively. These appointments are subject to confirmation by the Wisconsin State Senate.
