UW-Platteville chapter of the American Chemical Society earns Honorable Mention award
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. —The University of Wisconsin-Platteville chapter of the American Chemical Society has been awarded an Honorable Mention for their programs and activities conducted throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. Dr. Raja Annamalai advises the organization. The award will be presented at the spring meeting of the ACS April 7-11, 2013 in New Orleans, La.
The UW-Platteville ACS chapter, also known as the Alchemist Club provides a wide variety of activities throughout the year for members to get involved on campus and in the community. Teaching children in schools about opportunities in chemistry has been one area the group has excelled in. Boy Scout weekends and Girl Scout days hosted on campus have been popular with those students who are looking to earn their badge for sciences. Adopt-a-Highway, Relay for Life and social outings are other events held during the year that assisted the Alchemist Club to receive the honor.
Currently, the Alchemist Club is in the process of holding their annual pumpkin-decorating contest. Members of the club decorate pumpkins in the likeness of UW-Platteville chemistry professors. The pumpkins sit outside of their perspective professor’s office on the second and third floors of Ottensman Hall. A penny war is held to see which pumpkins will be dropped off the roof of Ottensman Hall during the last week in October.
Goals the Alchemist Club are working toward include promoting ACS on campus and in the community, getting more involved with ACS on the state level and getting some chemistry speakers to come to campus. Currently, the club has nearly 40 members with room for more to join.
“The Alchemist Club is a very friendly group that is always looking for new members to join,” said Danielle Kielhofer, the club’s president. “You don’t have to be a chemistry major to join. We offer fun and community service activities for anyone interested in chemistry.”
