Schulman named Woman of the Year
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Deb Schulman, who was the head volleyball coach for 28 years and served in the Athletic Department for 29, earned the 2017 University of Wisconsin-Platteville Dr. Carol Sue Butts Woman of the Year Award.
Schulman, who is retiring June 30, will be honored at the all-university convocation Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. in Velzy Commons, Ullsvik Hall. The award recognizes female employees and students who make a difference in the lives of women. It is named for Provost Emeritus Carol Sue Butts, who served at UW-Platteville from 1998 until 2010 with stints as provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and interim chancellor. She retired in the summer of 2010 after a year as the interim chancellor.
“I am very honored by this,” Schulman said. “It’s a very prestigious award, and I’ve always looked up to the people who have previously won this. Carol Sue Butts did so much for women on this campus and was a great mentor to so many of us. It’s why we are in education, to help people.”
Besides coaching the women’s volleyball team for nearly three decades, Schulman also served as an assistant and then associate athletic director and the senior women’s administrator. She impacted thousands of female students through her leadership roles.
“It’s hard to pinpoint one thing that really stands out, but I really enjoyed the work our teams did with Habitat for Humanity,” she said. “That helped a lot of single women obtain homes, and it also helped our student-athletes learn to give back to the community. In their adult lives, many of them are still doing those things.”
Schulman led 19 of her 28 teams to at least 20 wins per season and finished with an overall record of 641-380. Six of her Pioneer teams made the NCAA Division III post-season tournament, with two earning Sweet 16 finishes. The 1992 squad finished 39-3, winning the league title for the first time in school history and the 2010 squad finished 33-4, winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
Throughout her time as head coach, Schulman earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Midwest Region Coach of the Year and was inducted into both the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Hall of Fame as a four-sport athlete and UW-Platteville’s Hall of Fame for coaching.
