PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The Pioneer Sportsman’s Club at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville traveled to the University of Kentucky for the regional championships in Wilmore, Ky. The Pioneer Sportsman’s Club placed second out of 10 in division 2 for American Trap with a score of 469/500.

Joshua Criscimagna, Cassandra Epping, Mathew Henningfield, Christian Jensen and Reed Slaby all competed. Both Henningfield and Jensen shot a score of 99/100.

Slaby, a senior electrical engineering major from Wausau, Wis., is the team’s shotgun coach. “This is the first time we have placed as a team in an out-of-state competition, so I was ecstatic about our performance in Kentucky,” said Slaby. “It's also the first time we've been able to put together a full team of experienced shooters.”

Epping, a sophomore pre-vet major from New Munster, Wis., scored a 98/100 at the Kentucky regional. She was on her high school trap team and received the Scholastic Clay Target Program scholarship to keep shooting in college. She recently tore her rotator cuff and does not know when she will be cleared for competition.

Jensen, a freshman environmental engineering major from Burlington, Wis., also participated in his high school trap shooting team. “I was pretty excited to shoot,” said Jensen. “It was pretty cool to see us shoot well at our first major event.”

Criscimagna, a sophomore engineering physics major from Burlington, Wis., and Henningfield, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Burlington, Wis., both participated in the competition as well.

Taking second place in this competition also means that $5,500 will be placed in the Pioneer Sportsman’s Club’s MidwayUSA endowment fund. The MidwayUSA fund is a way for shooting clubs to raise money for their organization.

This is the Pioneer Sportman’s Club’s third year competing as an organized team, and they are seeing an increase in interest, according to Slaby.

This is the first time the team has placed in a regional competition. The next competition will be in March 2014 for the Association of College Unions International Championship in San Antonio, Texas.
