Muelbroek to travel to Europe for international study opportunity
PLATTEVILLE- UW-Platteville student Jessica Meulbroek, a native of Suamico, will travel to Germany to continue her education in mechanical engineering. A senior at UWP, Meulbroek decided to attend The School of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt because its location is in a well-known engineering area of Germany.
By studying internationally, Meulbroek hopes to gain a greater world-view and an appreciation for other cultures while learning about engineering at the same time.
While Muelbroek is not taking traditional classes, she will be participating in a group project concerning fatigue analysis. Muelbroek said that the percentage of metal failures due to fatigue failure is 98 percent. Meulbroek's project could involve anything from designing a component that will be under fatigue loading to researching how material responds to fatigue loading. She will not know the specifics of the project until she arrives.
"Please understand, as an exchange student, there are many things that I just don't know before I leave," said Muelbroek. "Part of the excitement of going is not knowing what to expect."
To prepare for the trip, Muelbroek is studying German a bit to familiarize herself with the vocabulary. She has also been studying German culture and history.
Muelbroek embarks on her journey Sunday, March 2 and will return Thursday, July 31. Her eight-hour flight will begin in Chicago and end in Frankfurt, Germany.
