UWP broadcasting students win more awards

PLATTEVILLE - Television production students at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville continued their run of success by winning four awards at the National Broadcasting Society Region 5 production competition Oct. 25 in Omaha, Neb.

Students took first place in the Video Sports Play-by-Play category for their coverage of UW-Platteville men's basketball. Jeremy Hach directed the winning telecast. Norb Durst and Jimmy Flannery were the game announcers.

"That award was especially satisfying," advisor Robert Snyder said. "Sports coverage is one of the most competitive categories. We can proudly say that we're the best in the Midwest."

The basketball game coverage also will be submitted to the National Broadcasting Society's national production competition.

Brandon Pepin received a second place in the Music Video category. He produced, directed, videotaped and edited a music video for his brother's band, Undying Allegiance. The video was a project for his course in post production.

"Brandon put in a ton of time on his project," Snyder said. "For a class project to place is a pretty amazing accomplishment, but I'm not surprised."

The student-produced newscast, "University Report," received an honorable mention in the Video News Program category. Valerie Ackerman produced the show. Other students who worked on the newscast were David Clay, Megan Etter, Derek Freymiller, Jaci Leonard, Heather Schaufenbil, Ashley Snyder, Hach and Pepin.

"Week in and week out, students put a lot of effort into the newscast, and it shows," Snyder said. "Our newscast consistently has placed at NBS and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association's student contest."

In the Video Instructional/Industrial/Promotional Production category, Bruce Haag received an honorable mention. Haag produced a video on a new injection molding machine as an independent study project for Majid Tabrizi of the department of industrial studies. Tabrizi called Haag's work exemplary.

Snyder said the awards illustrate how capable UWP's students are in producing a wide range of television projects. "Our students' skill sets can take them anywhere," he said.

Students from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin competed in the Region 5 competition. The National Broadcasting Society is a student and professional society of 87 chapters on college, university, community college and high school campuses.
