UWP Winterim students to study law enforcement in Honduras
PLATTEVILLE - A group of 12 University of Wisconsin-Platteville criminal justice students will travel to Honduras over the winter break to compare law enforcement in Honduras and the United States.
Much of the trip, led for the third time by UWP criminal justice lecturer Aric Dutelle, will focus on underwater forensic investigation techniques.
That includes instruction in proper procedures for searching underwater for bodies and other evidence, documenting and photographing its location and recovering it.
"You can teach photography here, but photography underwater is a different animal," Dutelle said.
All 12 of the students either are already certified scuba divers or will complete training started in the UWP pool when they do required open-water dives after arriving in Honduras, Dutelle said.
The trip begins on Friday, Jan. 2, and concludes on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009. In addition to the diving work, students also will tour the national police department facilities as well as the municipal police department and jail. There also is some time allotted for sightseeing and other cultural opportunities. Students will be required to keep a journal and also write a paper of the similarities and differences between Honduran and American police practices.
