PLATTEVILLE- UW-Platteville student Daniel Giebel, a native of Kaukauna, will travel to Germany to continue his education in engineering. Giebel chose to attend the University of Darmstadt because Germany is known for engineering and the area holds heritage for Giebel, as his great-great grandparents were from Germany. He became involved in studying internationally through a one-to-one exchange program with the University of Darmstadt. Giebel is one of three students from UWP attending the University of Darmstadt this semester.

Giebel hopes to learn more about the culture, become semi-fluent in the language and meet new people. He will be taking classes in mechanics of materials, signals and systems and German language.

Giebel felt that language might pose some barriers early on but, as time passes would not be an issue. He said that it is much like the U.S. in that there are many dialects. Giebel will be staying in a dormitory at the University of Darmstadt.

Giebel looks forward to seeing the older architecture in German cities and possibly visiting the more popular tourist spots in France, Italy and Greece while in Europe.

In preparation for his trip to Darmstadt, Giebel talked with people who have studied in Europe. He also contacted German students on issues related to U.S. and Germany.

"I have a roommate who is a student from Germany. Through him I have realized some of the cultural differences and different standards of living already," said Giebel.

Giebel will leave in March and return in July. He will have an 8 to 9 hour flight from Chicago to Darmstadt, Germany.
