Dubuque Youth Symphony concert and workshop
PLATTEVILLE- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will host the Dubuque Youth Symphony for a concert on Saturday, May 10, at 8 p.m. at the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts.
The program will consist of the Candide Overture written by Berenstein, Symphony No. 5 or March Slav. by Tchaikovsky and the Clarinet Concerto No. 3 with Jennifer Heacock on clarinet, the winner of the 2003 DYS Concerto Competition, which was held in mid-March. Jennifer is a senior at Western Dubuque High School in Epworth, Iowa. The performance at UWP will be assisted by the horn and percussion sections from the UWP orchestra.
Two-hour workshops will be provided to the DYS by members of UWP faculty: Barry Ellis, bassoon professor and wind ensemble director; Gary Leopold, band director and trumpet professor; John Marco, clarinet professor and Benjamin Shapira, orchestra director and strings professor. Three simultaneous master classes will be conducted for brass, winds and strings.
"The workshops are meant to give the DYS high school students a positive musical professional learning experience," said Shapira.
The DYS is comprised of mostly high-school aged musicians who auditioned for the youth symphony. There are a number of future UWP students, to be freshmen next year, in this organization.
Tickets for the DYS concert are $5 for adults and $2 for students and are available through the University Box Office in the Center for the Arts.
The University Box Office is open Monday - Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached by calling 608-342-1298.
