Children’s Center earns five-star rating
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Children’s Center has met the highest level of quality standards and received a five-star rating through the Youngstar program, a state organization with the Department of Children and Families.
“The Children’s Center is going above and beyond what the state requires to be licensed,” said Julie Soja, director of the center. “Our facility provides quality care that the state considers to be top of the line.”
To receive a five-star rating, childcare centers must go through a formal evaluation process that assesses director and teacher education, environment and curriculum, business and professional practices, and child health and wellness. The process must be repeated every year to maintain the five-star rating.
The Children’s Center became nationally accredited earlier this year through the National Early Childhood Program Accreditation. To achieve accreditation, the center completed a four-step process to determine if they met the nationally recognized criteria for high quality. Centers that are nationally accredited through state approved accrediting bodies automatically receive either a four- or five-star rating.
“We earned a five-star rather than a four-star rating because our teachers have exceeded the educational requirements,” said Soja. “Having a five-star rating will reinforce the quality of care and education the center provides.”
The Children’s Center employs approximately 30 university students each semester, most of which are seeking elementary and early childhood education or psychology degrees. It also serves as a lab for education courses and a place for psychology and art students to observe children and their activities.
