UWP Rountree Ensemble to perform an all-Mozart concert

PLATTEVILLE - Rountree Ensemble, University of Wisconsin-Platteville's chamber music ensemble-in-residence, will perform the next concert of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The program will focus entirely on the music of Mozart and will be held in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts, located on the UWP campus.

Opening the program will be a quartet for oboe and strings, which will highlight four expressive and technical aspects of the oboe. This will be followed by a quintet for clarinet and strings. Written for Mozart's friend, Anton Stadler, the work showcases the clarinet's range and tone colors of its different registers.

After intermission, the ensemble will offer a quartet for flute and strings in D, the first of four such works written for that combination by Mozart. The final performance of the evening will be a quintet for piano and winds. When Mozart composed this piece, he wrote to his father, "It is the best thing I have written so far in my life." According to John Marco, Rountree Ensemble's artistic director, "This piece is lively and joyful, playing on the flute's agility and elegance."

UWP music faculty performing in the concert will be Margaret Cornils, flute; Laura Medisky, oboe; Marco, clarinet; Barry Ellis, bassoon; Matthew Beecher, French Horn; Eugene Alcalay, piano; Kevin Price, cello; Paul Brenner, violin and viola; and guest artist Isabella Lippi, violin.

"The music of Mozart is just about as perfect as music can get. It has a unique combination of polished classical balance and subtle undercurrents of emotion. Over the last two centuries, musicians have regarded his work with the utmost admiration. We eagerly look forward to sharing this beautiful music with our audience," said Marco.

Rountree Ensemble's next concert of the season will take place on the evening of Wednesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFA. The theme for that program will be Serenade, featuring the works of Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Dvorak.
