Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company comes to UWP

PLATTEVILLE - The Center for the Arts Performing Arts Series at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville will host the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company on Monday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall. The folk dance ensemble features a live orchestra and consists of 70 performers. It is the Official Tour of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Ukraine and has toured in 31 countries including Austria, Ecuador, Romania and Greece.

The history of the ensemble goes back to 1937 when Pavlo Virsky and Mykola Bolotov, well-known Ukrainian ballet masters, brought together a group of folk dancers. Virsky headed the ensemble from 1955 to 1975. Under his guidance, the ensemble matured into a professional dance company. Myroslav Vantukh has been in charge of the ensemble since 1980. His main objective for the company is careful preservation and development of folk choreographic art.

Tickets for this event are $28 for general admission; $26 for faculty and senior citizens; $20 for kids under 18 and $10 for UWP students with a current ID. Tickets are available through the University Box Office located on the ground floor of Ullsvik Hall. The University Box Office hours are Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are available by phone at (608) 342-1298 or at http://tickets.uwplatt.edu.
