Erich Matola named Chief Information Officer at UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE - Assistant Chancellor for Administrative Services, Robert Cramer, announced today that Erich Matola will join the University of Wisconsin-Platteville community in early November. Matola will serve as the university's chief information officer, with responsibility for providing leadership for the campus in information technology.

In speaking of the selection of Matola to fill this critical management position, Cramer noted, "Erich Matola has over 15 years of information technology experience, eight of which were executive management positions. He has served as chief information officer in public and private institutions of higher education. He has demonstrated his creativity, his inclusive and visionary leadership style, and his commitment to delivering high quality services within budget. Erich brings a wealth of knowledge in tech support, application development, instructional technology, network and telecommunications support, and web services to UWP."

Operational units under the supervision/jurisdiction of the chief information officer include the learning technology center, information technology development, networking, operations, help desk, and desktop support.

Matola comes to UW-Platteville from the position of chief information officer at Alliant International University in San Diego, California, where he has provided leadership and vision for all technology issues, supporting over 4200 students and 1000 full-time faculty and staff. He has managed a staff of over 30 IT professionals at six campuses within the USA, one campus in Mexico City, and partner schools in Tokyo and Hong Kong. He has extensive experience with course management systems, telecommunication technology, and adding new technologies to classrooms.

Matola earned his undergraduate degree in German from the University of Maryland in College Park. He has an associate degree in information management from the Community College of the Air Force and master's degrees in education from Chapman University in Orange, California, and systems management with an emphasis in information systems from the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, California.

In speaking about his decision to accept the CIO position at UWP, Matola noted, "I greatly appreciate and am very intrigued with the opportunity to serve UWP as CIO. This is a capstone opportunity for me to provide leadership for campus information technology and collaboratively ensure UWP receives the full benefit of current and future administrative and learning technologies.

Matola is married to Eva and has three daughters. He has been involved with local community development groups and a number of technology and CIO advisory boards. He and Eva have been involved with the Turning Point Pregnancy Center, assisting young mothers with parenting skills. Matola's hobbies include traveling and exploring new or historical places, seeing movies on the big screen, and practicing German and Spanish.
