UWP Speed Networking Session offers career building skills to alumni, current students and community members

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Alumni Association will be hosting a Speed Networking Session on Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Platteville East and West Rooms of the Pioneer Student Center, located on the UWP campus.

UWP students, alumni, community members and prospective employers are all invited to attend the event to build interviewing skills, meet people, collaborate on business ideas and make connections.

"The speed networking activity will be a fun and valuable opportunity to practice your 60-second elevator speech while learning about a variety of opportunities from alumni of UWP, as well as employers who recruit UWP students and graduates," said Diana Trendt, director of the UWP Career Center. Participants will be seated in pairs when the speed networking begins. During each fast paced session, participants will be able to network face-to-face with other UWP students or alumni. After the end of each session, participants will quickly alternate their seating arrangements to pair up with their next networking opportunity.

"Events such as the Speed Networking Session, career fair events, and guest speakers invited to classes or student organizations are a great networking resource," said Trendt. "The information gathered through these types of activities could lead to a possible internship or full-time employment opportunity."

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 70 percent of all jobs are found through networking and social or family contacts.

"With networking as the predominant method of finding a career, college students need to be taking advantage of the best sources of networking available to them on their college campus," added Trendt. "There is no better way for a student to develop effective networking skills than to practice them with a professional who understands you are learning or with an alum of your university who was recently in your shoes and is eager to share with you their success story."

The event is free to attend and light refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Anne Killian, event coordinator, UWP Alumni Services, at (608) 342-1217 or killiana@uwplatt.edu. To register, visit http://alumni.uwplatt.edu/events.
