UWP student receives NCAA scholarship award
PLATTEVILLE- The NCAA has awarded University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Jessica Scott a one-time $7,500 postgraduate scholarship to study at a university or professional school of her choosing.
To be eligible for such an award, students must be in their final season of eligibility within a given sport and perform with distinction at the varsity level. They must maintain a grade point average greater than 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent). Community service, academic and athletic performance and volunteer community service all play significant parts in the NCAA's selection process. Students must also display strong leadership qualities and be an example to their peers.
The NCAA gives 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 to women and 87 to men. Those scholarships are then divided evenly between the three sports seasons, leaving 29 scholarships available per season.
Scott graduated in May 2009 with a biology/pre-physical therapy degree and chemistry minor. In the fall, she will attend a three-year program at UW-Madison to work toward a doctorate of physical therapy.
"Jessica is a great role model for young people. She has worked hard to reach her academic and athletic goals and this scholarship is a tribute to her diligence and perseverance," said Lisa Riedle, associate dean of the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science at UWP. "I believe when she sets herself on a path she can accomplish her goals."
James Nickasch, head coach for UWP's track and field program, has had the opportunity to work with Scott for the past four seasons as an athlete and student. "It has been a real pleasure having Jessica as a leader both on and off the track," said Nickasch. Scott competed in cross country and indoor as well as outdoor track and field, and has been recognized for her participation in the latter. Scott plans on staying busy academically and physically, competing in half-marathons this summer and during her time at UW-Madison.
She was very gracious to all who supported her, thanking "everyone who contributed to the scholarship process [and] my dad and fiancé for always supporting me and pushing me to do my best."
