UWP invites community members, faculty, staff and students to spend "A Day with PACCE"

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Pioneer Center for Community Engagement (PACCE) will host "A Day with PACCE" on Thursday, April 30. This event is an opportunity for students to publicly share the community-based projects they completed through PACCE, and for anyone who is interested to listen to a friendly debate over whether or not Scholarship of Engagement should be a graduation requirement.

"A Day with PACCE" will have events for faculty and staff, UWP students and community members to attend. Pioneer Engagement Scholars Engagement Poster Day will begin at 11 a.m. Over 800 students will display posters that describe their projects and how those projects helped them Experience, Grow and Make a Difference. The poster session will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Heritage Hall and University North and South Rooms of the PSC.

The day will end with a friendly debate over the question, should Scholarship of Engagement be a requirement for graduation? Everyone is invited to hear two faculty members debate the pros and cons of the question and join in a discussion regarding the topic. During the first part of the debate, Tom Hunt, UWP agriculture professor, will argue the "pro" side and George Smith, UWP speech professor, will argue the "con" side of the debate. The rest of the debate will be open for audience participation. This event will be held in the Platteville East and West Rooms of the PSC. There will be light refreshments served

PACCE provides funding to UWP students who are working on a community project for academic credit under the supervision of a faculty member and in partnership with a community member. There were 18 PACCE projects last semester in which UWP students, faculty members and community partners were involved and the number of projects has grown to 45 this semester. "A Day with PACCE" will allow attendees to learn about PACCE and the opportunities the organization offers. There is no cost to attend the events.
