UWP's chamber ensemble-in-residence to perform in Madison

PLATTEVILLE- Rountree Ensemble, University of Wisconsin- Platteville's chamber music ensemble-in-residence, will perform a concert at the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison on Sunday, April 5 at 12:30 p.m. The concert will be broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio. The concert will be open to the public, and admission is free. This will be the ensemble's fourth WPR concert in as many seasons.

The concert will include "Song Catcher," by Mark Piszczek. The song is a four-movement work based on Wisconsin Native American songs that Piszczek found on recordings made by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Library of Congress from 1937 through 1946. The program will also include three songs for soprano, clarinet and piano by the early Romantic composer Louis Spohr. UWP professor of music Rebekah Demaree will be the soprano soloist. The concert will also feature "Three Pieces for Clarinet," written by Igor Stravinsky in 1919. The performance's main piece is the Quintet in B flat, Opus 6 for piano and winds by Ludwig Thuille. Of the last work, Rountree Ensemble's artistic director John Marco commented, "This is lovely music by an underperformed composer. It has richness and grandeur that is reminiscent of Brahms, a most appealing piece."

Gallery Three is the location in the Chazen Museum where the concerts are performed. Of this venue, Marco said, "It is perfect place to perform chamber music. The ambience and acoustics are superb, Marv Nonn does a first rate job engineering the broadcasts, Lori Skelton is a most gracious host, and the audiences are enthusiastic."

Anyone with questions about the performance may contact Marco at (608) 342-1012 or marcoj@uwplatt.edu.
