UWP to participate in Earth Hour 2009
PLATTEVILLE- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville and surrounding community is invited to turn off their lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28 as part of Earth Hour 2009. This global initiative, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, supports action for global climate change.
Ashley Snyder is a junior majoring at UWP in communication technologies and is welcoming participation from the UWP community. Besides participating in the event, Snyder added, "The best way to help with this event is to tell as many people you know about it as possible."Over 60 countries around the world and over 10 major cities in the United States are participating. During last year's Earth Hour, 50 million people from around the world participated. Famous landmarks also participated, including the Coliseum in Rome, London's City Hall, Chicago's Sears Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
"The climate crisis threatens the ability of our planet to support its inhabitants. It has never been more urgent that the voice of the people be heard on this issue. Earth Hour not only focuses global attention on the need to find solutions to climate change, but demonstrates the power that each of us has to make a difference in the future of our planet," said WWF president and CEO Carter Roberts.
Snyder responded, "We can all consume energy in our everyday lives in a more efficient manner. For example, instead of using incandescent bulbs to light your home, use compact florescent bulbs. They use 75 percent less energy than an incandescent and they can save you about $30 or more on electricity costs over each bulb's lifetime."
Snyder said there are many activities participants can do without using electric lights. A candlelit dinner, a lights out slumber party, a green themed party with green themed snacks and drinks and star gazing are just a few.
