UWP offers free help on tax preparation

PLATTEVILLE - Syed Moiz, University of Wisconsin-Platteville assistant professor of business and administration, who is also a licensed CPA, and two UWP accounting students, Julia Clark and Ryan Brandenburg, are offering free tax preparation assistance to UWP students and qualifying members of the community. The service is offered by appointment from 5 to 7 p.m. in Room 1110 Ullsvik Hall, Monday through Thursday, until April 15.

The program is offered to low-income individuals and families making $39,000 or less per year. Since mid-February, Moiz and his students have been able to help approximately 17 people. "One student called recently to express his thanks," Moiz said. "Although, we usually do not take tax returns that are too complex, we were able to help him with a more complicated one and he saved hundreds of dollars."

Because this year's program is not offered through the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, the service is 100 percent volunteer. Moiz and his team can usually process two or three tax returns per day and the first one in is the first one out. They are very busy right now and there is currently a wait time of three days from the time the appointment is made.

"Students gain experience and help people at the same time," Moiz said. "Also, it's good for their resume as well."

During the week of March 16, spring break, the service will not be offered.

For more information or to make an appointment for preparation assistance, contact Moiz at (608) 342-1336 or moizs@uwplatt.edu.
