Member of UWP academic staff publishes 15th short story in India in five years
PLATTEVILLE - In June, University of Wisconsin-Platteville academic staff member Stephen Shepherd published his 15th short story in India in five years. Shepherd first released his writing to an international audience in 2003 when the Allahabad, India, literary magazine The Taj Mahal Review published his short story, "Out of Sight Diner." The Taj Mahal Review now exclusively publishes his work. Shepherd has been teaching Freshman Composition at UWP since January 2004.
Shepherd's relationship with India came about through a friend in the literary world who had read his work. His friend understood the country and its literary scene from vacationing in India every spring. Upon her recommendation, Shepherd submitted some work to some literary journals, with four stories appearing in the country in 2003. Since June 2004, Shepherd has had 10 more stories published, all in The Taj Mahal Review. His latest story is called "The Information Wade Overload."
After his first published work in 1977, Shepherd went on to publish poetry, articles, short stories and corporate reports over the next 20 years. His pieces have appeared in Voices International, New Earth Review, Country People Magazine and Communications Briefings. Excerpts from one of his articles appeared in The Wall Street Journal and he won the Presidential E Award for corporate reports on the Ertl Toy Company and Barnstead Thermolyne Corporation.
Shepherd took a break from writing in 1989 to found and build Shepherd Inc., the first full-service desktop publishing and production company in the United States that, at its peak, had 130 full-time and 40 part-time employees. He even won the Small Businessperson of the Year Award in 1998 from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
While operating his business, Shepherd released a single story in the 12-year time span. He returned to writing full-time in 2000 and published the short-story collection, The Distance to Venus and Other Stories. The collection was revised and rereleased the following year, appearing shortly before the novella, The Last Chord Concert in 2002. The novella received a major national review in Publishers Weekly in May 2002.
