UWP mixed choirs to perform classic Brahms piece
PLATTEVILLE - According to Bob Demaree, University of Wisconsin-Platteville director of choral activities, The Brahms Requiem is one of the greatest choral music works ever written. On Wednesday, March 11, the University Singers, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Chamber Choir and choral alumni will be performing the work, accompanied by a full orchestra. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts on the UWP campus.
Over 150 singers will perform in addition to the full orchestra, composed of students, faculty and members of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. This is the first time in UWP history that the requiem will be performed with students.
"The Brahms Requiem was written by Brahms as a personal statement after his mother and mentor passed away," Demaree said. "Traditionally a requiem has a threatening feel but this particular German requiem is more consoling and conciliatory. It focuses not on death, but on everlasting life."
To defray the cost of this performance, admission will be $5 for faculty, staff and adults and $3 for UWP students with an ID and individuals under 18. Tickets are available through the University Box Office located on the ground floor of Ullsvik Hall. The University Box Office hours are Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are available by phone at (608) 342-1298 or at http://tickets.uwplatt.edu.
