UWP Confucius Institute to celebrate Year of the Ox with free event

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Confucius Institute will welcome the Chinese new year with a celebration on Sunday, Feb. 8, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. This free event will feature continuous entertainment and activities and will be held in Velzy Commons, located in Ullsvik Hall on the UWP campus.

Stage entertainment for the day includes a lion dance troupe from Madison, Mandarin language lessons with professor He Ganjun, scholar in residence from the South Central University of Nationalities, traditional new year songs by students from SCUN, traditional folk dances by the Hua Yun Dance Group and door prizes. These acts will take five to 10 minutes and repeat throughout the day.

Activities include a kow tow ceremony; a Chinese story, "The Legend of Nian," calligraphy and couplets; Chinese paper cutting and the lucky pinwheel.

Food will be served throughout the event. A buffet will include dumplings, rice balls, spring rolls and fish.

The Confucius Institute opened in April 2008. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Chinese language and culture.

"Through this festival, families in Platteville and the surrounding communities can share in the celebration of a happy new year and wishes for prosperity with families half a world away," said Nancy Hammermeister of the Confucius Institute.
