Paralympics medalist to speak at UWP
PLATTEVILLE- University of Wisconsin-Platteville alumnus Dana Zimmerman to speak on campus on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in the North and South Rooms of the Pioneer Student Center. This event is sponsored in collaboration with Students Planning for Success, Campus Programming and Relations, the Teaching Excellence Center, Services for Students with Disabilities, and Student Affairs.
Zimmerman will discuss his experiences in the Paralympics and how he has overcome the challenges presented by cerebral palsy. His speech aims to empower the audience as well as create sensitivity and diversity awareness.
Zimmerman graduated from UWP in 2007 with a degree in physical education and a minor in health education. Zimmerman competed in the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia, where his 4:30.14 time in the 1,500 meter race earned him a silver medal. His cerebral palsy does not keep him from leading a very active life. In addition to training for the Paralympics and giving motivational speeches, he teaches adaptive physical education at Highland Park Elementary School in St. Paul, Minn.
