Women in international managerial positions presentation at UWP

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will host "Global Border Crossing: U.S. Expatriate Managerial Women and Executive Women in Latin America and the European Union," on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Wisconsin Room of the Pioneer Student Center.

The one-hour presentation will be given by UWP professors of business and accounting Marge Karsten and Susan Hansen and assistant professor of business and accounting Wendy Brooke. They have been studying the experiences of women in international management positions in Latin America and the European Union.

The presentation will be based on a report by Karsten, Brooke and Hansen. According to this report, stereotypes and assumptions, along with inadequate training and development, are just a few issues that hinder women from obtaining international positions. Solution strategies from the report, such as diversity requirements for candidate selection and more specific and intense training programs, will also be given.

Karsten, Brooke and Hansen intend to investigate this topic further, studying Asian countries like China and Japan. In the meantime, Karsten said she hopes this presentation will enlighten students on the issues of race, gender and ethnicity and how they impact advancement in the workplace.

"It will give them a better understanding of the issues women in the workforce and in management confront in Latin America and in Europe and ways for U.S. women expatriates to achieve parity in international markets," she said.

This event is sponsored by the Curriculum Improvement Fund grant and is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Karsten at (608) 342-1749 or karsten@uwplatt.edu, Brooke at (608) 342-6049 or brookew@uwplatt.edu, or Hansen at (608) 342-1436 or hansens@uwplatt.edu.
