UWP faculty forum will address the race riots of 1919

PLATTEVILLE - On Wednesday, Feb. 4, University of Wisconsin-Platteville social sciences professor David Krugler will present a faculty forum, "The Race Riots of 1919: America's War at Home." Professor Amy Parsons of the humanities department will serve as the respondent.

The presentation is part of the UWP Liberal Arts and Education Faculty Forum series. It will begin at 5 p.m. in the Lundeen Lecture Hall, located in Doudna Hall on the UWP campus. Refreshments will be served and there is no cost to attend this event. UWP students, faculty, staff and the community will have the opportunity to learn about a national conflict that engulfed the United States in the wake of World War I.

Between November 1918 and February 1920, the nation experienced nine race riots, dozens of smaller, racially charged disturbances and 97 lynchings. In almost every instance, white mobs provoked the violence by attacking African Americans.

In his address, Krugler will use the stories of four African Americans caught up in this violence to explain why there was so much racial conflict in such a short period of time. The forum will provide details of the riots that occurred in Chicago; Knoxville, Tenn.; Omaha, Neb; and Washington, D.C. Krugler will also explain why the study of this tumultuous time in United States history is significant and relevant today.

"The Race Riots of 1919: America's War at Home" is adapted from a book Krugler is writing. During the 2007-08 academic year, Krugler was on sabbatical to research the book.
