UWP celebrates 40 years of jazz with alumni reunion festival and concert

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will celebrate 40 years of jazz on the weekend of Feb. 6 and 7. UWP students, faculty, alumni and the community are invited to participate in a series of weekend events.

On Friday, Feb. 6, two-time Grammy award winning saxophonist and composer Jeff Coffin will perform at 7:30 p.m. Coffin, a member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and now the Dave Matthews Band, will show off his skills in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts on the UWP campus. On Saturday, Feb. 7, the jazz celebration will continue with the annual High School Jazz Festival, where area high school bands will have a chance to show their talent. Jazz festival performances will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the concert hall in the Center for the Arts. The Rountree Jazz Ensemble will perform at 12:30 p.m., followed by more high school jazz performances and a clinic conducted by Coffin at 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, UWP alumni are invited to attend the 40 Years of Jazz at UWP reunion. Rehearsal for the alumni band will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, with cocktails beginning at 4:30 p.m. and a dinner and program to follow. The weekend will commence on Saturday with a concert beginning at 7 p.m. in the concert hall in the Center of the Arts. Performing are selected high school ensembles, the Faculty Jazz Group, Rountree Jazz Ensemble, Jazz I, Pioneer Jazz Orchestra and Jeff Coffin.
