Salmon-Stephens receives outstanding alumni award

PLATTEVILLE - Tammy Salmon-Stephens, a 1994 alumna of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, will receive the UWP Outstanding Alumni award during a recognition luncheon on commencement day, Saturday, Dec. 13. The award recognizes UWP alumni who have gained excellent professional accomplishment since their graduation in the last 15 years.

Salmon-Stephens is currently the senior director of Women in Engineering and Engineering Advising at UWP. In her role, she serves as the lead advisor for the college, advises a select group of engineering students, and coordinates, standardizes and provides training for all engineering advisors. In addition, Salmon-Stephens is responsible for the recruitment and retention of women into engineering programs and serves as the faculty advisor to the Society of Women Engineers Student Section.

Salmon-Stephens has written or co-written 41 grants, 36 of which brought in $321,785 to the university. She has presented numerous times on opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For her efforts, Salmon-Stephens has won the University of Wisconsin System Regents Academic Staff Excellence Award from the UW-Platteville Women in Engineering Program and the Women in Engineering Initiative Award from the Women in Engineering ProActive Network.

Other UWP involvements include presidency of the EMS Alumni Chapter and service on the alumni board of directors for the university. She supports the UWP Foundation on a consistent basis and is a lifetime member of the UWP Alumni Association.

Her bachelor's degree is in industrial engineering. Salmon-Stephens also received her Master of Science in engineering from UWP in 2005.

In the community, Salmon-Stephens has been a Daisy Girl Scout assistant leader and a member of the St. Augustine's Capital Campaign Committee.

"It is an honor to be among the outstanding alumni," said Salmon-Stephens. "UWP graduates are everywhere and many alumni are very accomplished. I am proud of my education from UWP and will always appreciate what my education from UWP has given me. The education I have received from UWP has clearly changed my life path and it is my hope to create that same opportunity for others."

Salmon-Stephens expressed her thanks to her parents, Bruce and Deb Salmon of Wauzeka, her inlaws, Wayne and Elaine Stephens of Dodgeville, her husband, Doug Stephens, and her daughter, Mary Jane Stephens. "My personal and professional goals are not possible without the support of my family and friends," said Salmon-Stephens. "For that I am extremely lucky and grateful."
