Pauls receives outstanding alumni award

PLATTEVILLE - Darin Pauls, a 1993 alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, will receive the UWP Outstanding Alumni award during a recognition luncheon on commencement day, Saturday, Dec. 13. The award recognizes UWP alumni who have gained excellent professional accomplishment since their graduation in the last 15 years.

Pauls' professional career has taken him in a number of different directions. He started as a public accountant for CBIZ-Chicago, and quickly moved into their business consulting division. After leaving CBIZ he took the position of regional director of consulting services for Thomas Havey, LLP, a national public accounting firm. After relocating to Phoenix, Ariz., Pauls became a project manager for ePartners Inc., an international business and IT consulting firm, where he managed projects throughout the U.S. His expertise has taken Pauls as far away as the island of Antigua in the West Indies, where he implemented warehousing technologies for the Antiguan government and helped them to redesign their operations and controls.

Currently, Pauls is the CEO, president and founder of Beratung LLC. The company takes its name, Beratung, from the German language noun for consultation. The corporation specializes in business consulting and the implementation of Microsoft technology in the workplace.

In February of 2008, Microsoft developed a case study around Beratung's project to help another local corporation, Massage Envy, position itself for its accelerating growth. As their title suggests, Massage Envy provides professional massage therapists to its clients. With over 300,000 members, demand for their product was such that Massage Envy sought a scalable business model and turned to Beratung.

Pauls' company designed a system for managing and automating Massage Envy's business utilizing a number of different Microsoft products. The system was so successful that Microsoft produced a case study based entirely on the performance of Beratung's design.

"Within four months of implementing the solution," the Microsoft study stated, "Massage Envy opened an additional 100 clinics and reduced its royalty reconciliation process from 30 hours per week to 30 minutes. The company simplified franchise management, enhanced connectivity across the enterprise, and easily integrated a comprehensive solution that will continue to scale with the company as it expands into new markets."

Pauls transferred from UW-Madison to UWP to complete a Bachelor of Science in accounting degree. Since graduation he has achieved many industry certifications and accreditations.
