UWP's Critter Care workshop to teach youth about pet ownership
PLATTEVILLE- Youth entering fifth through eighth grades are invited to learn about animal care and pet ownership at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville School of Agriculture's Critter Care workshop July 28 from noon to 4 p.m. at Pioneer Farm.
"Critter Care is great for youth who want to get a pet, learn what it takes to be a responsible pet owner and have a happy, healthy pet in their home," said Gretchen Kamps, camp coordinator for the School of Agriculture.
The day will consist of four sessions. In Living With Our Animal Friends, participants will learn what to do when encountering stray animals and wildlife from Cheri Phillmore of the Iowa County Humane Society. She will also teach participants the daily tasks of caring for a pet.
Participants will then learn how to understand dog behavior in Dog Training 101: How they think, what they can learn. Participants will also learn how to teach their dog obedience skills and tricks and how to have a better relationship with their dog.
During the Glamorous Pets session, Julie Hauke from Bo's Pet Bow-tique will teach participants how to properly groom and manage their pet's coat.
In the final session, Healthy Pets, a Center Hill Veterinary Clinic veterinarian will educate participants on what to do when their pet is injured, how to approach a hurt animal, how to collect vital signs on an animal and what to do to keep pets healthy.
"It will give kids good hands-on experience with animals. They will get to interact with dogs and cats and participate in hands-on activities," said Kamps.
Registration before July 1 is $40 and $50 after. The fee includes snacks, a T-shirt and materials. Registration deadline is July 10. Pioneer Farm is located off Highway 80/81 on College Farm Road.
