UWP hosts E-day

PLATTEVILLE- University of Wisconsin-Platteville employees and non-academic staff were "educated, enhanced, empowered and energized" at E-day on June 4.

Staff could attend a variety of sessions throughout the day while in pay status. These sessions were designed to educate staff in their area of interest, enhance the camaraderie between the staff and their co-workers, empower them to contribute to UWP's future and energize the staff to do their best.

"It was wonderful, I really enjoyed it. This is my third or fourth year I've gone. I never miss it. I learn a lot. Some of it is stuff I already know, but it's good to be reminded of it," said Donald Wilson, UWP carpenter.

The first session was an interactive cooking demonstration and tasting activity led by Mike Ernst, UWP food service manager. Ernst has a degree in hotel restaurant management and owned his own restaurant for 13 years. Staff were able to sample Ernst's culinary creations while learning how to produce a high quality meal with little stress.

Pat Becker, a registered nurse at Southwest Health Center and licensed emergency medical technician, taught staff what to do in an emergency situation at work. Staff also learned how to recognize signs and symptoms of injuries and sudden illness.

At the "How to Enjoy Your Job! (Almost Every Day)" session, Dave Allen, a teacher and administrator for Platteville Public Schools, taught staff how to maintain a positive attitude at work.

Marc Wruble, UWP professor of psychology, presented staff with recent research on gender differences. He used this information to give suggestions for staff to improve acceptance, understanding and compassion.

The keynote speaker was Carl Olson, a retired educator. He taught staff to "energize their work environment." He addressed diversity, leadership, having a positive attitude, doing your best and enjoying your job. He shared with staff five things to be successful in their work: finding play at work, making other people's day, being there for their co-workers and choosing their attitude.

"Good, better, best. Never let it rest, till your good is better and your better is best," said Olson.

He also complimented the staff on the quality of work they already do. "I can tell everyone here has pride in this university. I can't find even a piece of paper on the floor. It looks nice. You come and you do your job well," stated Olson.
