UW-Platteville Alumni Association honors graduates with Lifetime Pioneer Award

PLATTEVILLE - At the University of Wisconsin-Platteville spring 2008 commencement ceremony, the UW-Platteville Alumni Association will honor several outstanding graduates with the Honorary Lifetime Pioneer Award. This spring, UW-Platteville students Lisa McLean, Alisha Slowey, Mollie Allred, Kenny Brotheridge, Abby Felix and Jonathan M. Schendt were recipients of the award.

The selection criterion for this award include a grade point average demonstrating academic excellence; campus activities and leadership; community involvement; professional development or employment; probability of future involvement in the Alumni Association; and a unique hardship or handicap that has been overcome.

McLean has been an active graduate student, serving as both the SUFAC advisor and the advisor for Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA). Additionally she has received the Outstanding Advisor to a Student Organization Award. She has also served as a graduate assistant for the Pioneer Involvement Center, an assistant for New Student Orientation and has worked as a writer for the UWP Office of Public Relations. She completed her undergraduate at UWP as well and is an active member of the Gamma Phi Beta Alumna Chapter for UWP. She has attended and helped to coordinate a number of leadership conferences and is Safe Zone and Stop the Hate trained.

McLean will complete her M.S.E. in counselor education in August and is a Higher Education track. She is the daughter of Brent and Julie McLean, of Belleville.

Slowey has served as a resident assistant and a senior assistant and is currently the Housing Resource Center supervisor and resident director collateral assistant. She has served in a number of leadership roles on campus, including on the Student Senate and in her residence halls. She has also received a number of awards including UWP Student Woman on the Year and the UWP Leadership in Excellence Award, both for 2006-07.

Slowey is a communications major. She is the daughter of Thomas and Mary Slowey, of Milton.

Allred has demonstrated her commitment to UWP by serving as a resident assistant and a senior assistant. She has been a member of the Society of Human Resource manager, the National Residence Hall Horary, Student Ambassadors, Brockert Hall Council and Southwest Hall Suite Forum. She has also done volunteer work with the Green Hills Council Girl Scouts, Relay for Life, University Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Red Cross Blood Drive.

Allred is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in human resources. She is the granddaughter of Mary Allred and the daughter of Delton Allred, of Mt. Carroll, Ill.

Brotheridge has held a number of positions on the Residence Hall Association and Student Senate. He has served as the co-chair for and has helped bring two state conferences to UWP. He has received many awards, including a nomination for the UWP Foundation of Excellence in Leadership Award, Student of the Year from WURHA and STAR pin from WURHA. Brotheridge has gained internship experience working for Paul Ryan and volunteered for the Mark Green campaign.

Brotheridge is a political science major with a minor in business administration. He is the son of Mark and Cynthia Brotheridge, of Janesville.

Felix has been active in a number of clubs and organization, including Kappa Alpha Sigma, Greek Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol, the Rangerette Dance Team and the Student Senate. She is a manager for Campus Catering and an event manager for Campus Programming and Relations. She is Stop the Hate trained and has volunteered with Relay for Life for the past three years, as well as at Family Advocates.

Felix will graduate with a degree in criminal justice. She is the daughter of Tom and Georgianna Felx, of Sun Prairie.

Schendt has demonstrated his leadership through his involvement with the Association of Computing Machinery. He has actively participated in the IBM sponsored International Programming contest held each October and has been elected vice president and president of ACM. Schendt was awarded a coveted internship from Cray Computers last summer and has been offered a position at Lockheed-Martin in Colorado Springs.

Schendt will graduate with a degree in computer science. He is the son of Bill and Kathy Schendt, of Janesville.
