Art faculty and students experience culture of New York
PLATTEVILLE — Faculty and students from the art department at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville recently traveled to New York to tour museums and galleries and to experience the culture of the city.
"This was a great chance to see firsthand some of the world's greatest art treasures, and New York is also one of the most exciting and dynamic urban environments in the world. To see artwork firsthand is incomparable to seeing it in a textbook or through media," said Linda James, assistant professor of art at UWP.
Three faculty members and five students from the art department departed for New York on March 17 and returned the 21. They visited several museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, The Frick Collection and the American Museum of Natural History. They also toured the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, the DC Moore Gallery and other galleries on 57th Street, and visited the studio of a contemporary artist practicing in New York.
"Everyone was just blown away by the installation artists at the Guggenheim," said Richard Molinski, who teaches painting, drawing and design at UWP. "Students really need to have a broad conception of what art is, and there is such an incredibly wide range of work in the museums and galleries in New York."
In addition to the various art the travelers saw, they also visited Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Wall Street, jazz clubs and even some theater.
"I would definitely recommend this trip, or any trip with the art department. Going to various art museums with the faculty allowed me to read much more deeply into the artworks. They pointed out things I never would've noticed along with providing background information on the artist and the piece. This trip gave me a definite change in perspective that I have taken with me back to Platteville," said Bridget Schutz-Ducklow, a psychology major with an art minor.
The faculty is hoping to make the trip an annual event, traveling to Europe every other year and to a major city like New York the other years. Anyone wanting more information about the trip may contact James at (608) 342-1781 or jamesl@uwplatt.edu.
