UWP's Kappa Delta Pi fundraise for schools in Africa
PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Kappa Delta Pi is looking to fundraise school supplies, books and money to donate to schools in Cameroon, Africa.
Last semester Kappa Delta Pi provided school supplies and books to a variety of locations, including a school in Jamaica and Family Advocates, a family shelter in Platteville. The group held book drives at the local supermarket and Platteville Public Library. The final event was to collect donations during their semiannual book fair in Doudna Hall, held last November.
"We donated over 130 books that were generously taken down to Jamaica for us by the students going for their preschool student teaching," Alissa Gunst, Kappa Delta Pi president, said.
After last semester's project, the group wanted to focus on one location long-term so they could do more. The schools in Cameroon, Africa became that focus. The schools that will be donated to, are being chosen based on need and member interest.
"I believe that it is important for UWP and organizations like the one that I am involved in to participate in these types of projects," Gunst said. "If I have a part in making the education of even one person in this world a little easier or a little more satisfying, I have accomplished a lifetime of worthiness."
Kappa Delta Pi is the international organization for education majors on campus. Some of the main objectives of the group are community involvement and professional development.
