UWP student creates promotional video for Platteville Police Department
PLATTEVILLE- Megan Etter, a senior in broadcasting at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, was able to put her broadcast production skills to practical use, creating a promotional video for the Platteville Police Department.
The Platteville police will use the video as a recruitment tool at career fairs. It depicts the different areas within the department including patrol, detectives, dispatch, community service officers and the explorer program. The department was in need of a video because their old recruitment video, also made by a UWP student seven years ago, was becoming outdated.
"We liked the last one so much that we asked UWP to make one for us again," said officer Andrea Droessler.
Etter took on the video request for her independent study project after Rob Synder, associate professor of broadcast production, informed her of the need. For the video, Etter shot interviews with different officers, footage of officers working and a staged arrest. She then edited the video, sequencing action footage with the interviews. It took Etter approximately five months to complete the video, but she said she learned a variety of skills along the way.
"I've never done anything like this before ... I definitely learned a lot. It increased my video editing skills and experience with Avid software. I know the importance of pre-production. I think that after this, I'd be okay with a video editing job," said Etter.
While creating the video, Etter also learned more about the Platteville Police Department. She said she enjoyed working with them.
"I liked riding along with them. They were easy to work with. I got right in the action. It was not just me as an outsider videotaping, I got to get involved and do what they do," said Etter.
The video will also be entered in the National Broadcast Society National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition. Students from across the nation compete in over 40 categories. UWP was a finalist for the third year in a row in the 2007-2008 competition for their music video, "30-CC Presents The Willie Harris Singers."
"We're very satisfied. It's exactly what we were looking for; a short, quality production,"'said lieutenant Scott Marquardt.
