UWP International Night features West African and Chinese performers

PLATTEVILLE- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will welcome the ALYO Children's Dance Theatre from Chicago and 21 students from the South Central University for Nationalities in Wuhan, China, for International Night. The event will take place April 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. in Velzy Commons in Ullsvik Hall and is open to the public.

International Night celebrates the diverse cultures of international students at UWP. Highlights of the night include authentic African and Chinese cuisine, the ALYO Children’s Dance Theater and the Chinese SCUN dance troupe. The SCUN students will also give a longer performance at the grand opening of UWP's Confucius Institute at 3 p.m. the same day. A Chinese dragon will begin the opening ceremony, which will display flags from all the countries where UWP hosts international students.

ALYO is a school that teaches youth African percussion, dance and song. It seeks to preserve the link between the traditions and values of African culture and the African-American experience. Their high energy performance will invite the audience to experience African culture while strengthening character.

"It will be an experience of a different kind that you usually don't get in the Midwest... Be prepared for good entertainment and good food," said Jens Lindner, event coordinator for International Night.

Tickets are available now until sold out or until the event at the Center for the Arts Box Office in Ullsvik Hall or the International Student Office in 101 Royce Hall. Cost is $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens, children ages 12 to 18 and UWP students with a valid student ID; and $8 for children under 12. Cost includes dinner and entertainment.
