UWP engineering students plan multi-use park for Platteville community
PLATTEVILLE- Playgrounds, soccer fields, tennis courts and concession stands were on the minds of three University of Wisconsin-Platteville civil engineering students throughout the fall semester while planning their senior design project.
The students of Team Platinum Planning, Dave Mortensen, Andrea Mueller and Michele Hartmann, worked with the city of Platteville to develop a plan for a multi-use park in the Prairie View Subdivision, located near Platteville High School.
Max Anderson and Kristina Fields, both engineering professors at UWP, advised the students. Michael Thompson, UWP engineering professor, advised the entire senior design class.
The park would provide the community of Platteville with three adult soccer fields, six tennis courts, a multi-use path, playground area, pond, parking area, concession stand and bathroom area.
Because the site was not level, Team Platinum Planning had to meet grading and drainage challenges to fit the needs of the park.
The team agreed that after these challenges were met, the most enjoyable part of the project was creating park layouts and fitting the different components of the park together. They used computer programs such as Civil 3-D and Microstation to assist in the planning.
Helping the community of Platteville was another aspect of the project the team thoroughly enjoyed. "This project addressed the city's need for a multi-use park and a project like this could really bring the community of Platteville together by connecting this to other area parks," Mortensen stated.
Team Platinum Planning also highlighted that Platteville High School could benefit from a multi-use park in close proximity to the school. The physical education classes could participate in a variety of activities with the multi-use path, soccer fields and tennis courts.
The team members represented a variety of civil engineering emphases and agreed that the project went well because of the individual expertise each member brought to the project.
"Designing the multi-use park allowed us to take the knowledge gained through our coursework at UWP and apply it to a project similar to those we will be encountering in our future civil engineering careers," Mueller said.
