UWP celebrates achievements of women breaking the glass ceiling

PLATTEVILLE- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Women's Council will be recognizing and celebrating the achievements of UWP women with a dinner and program on March 25. This first-time UWP event will honor over 80 women on the UWP campus who are in leadership positions or have won system-wide, state or national awards.

"This event is an idea from the UWP Women's Council," Deirdre Dalsing of the Women's Council said, "It was created in response to the council's original effort to recognize Dr. Carol Sue Butts on her winning the 2007 WWHEL Outstanding Achievement Award. Dr. Butts has been a driving force behind the Women's Council and has been a strong advocate and role model for most women on campus. As we looked to honor her, we expanded the depth of that to include the fact that we have so many women leaders on our campus," Dalsing said.

The program will feature a panel of three regional women administrators who have broken the glass ceiling in higher education. The women will discuss their career paths and inspire guests to continue professional pursuits in higher education.

The panel will include Carol Sue Butts, UWP provost and vice chancellor; Deborah Cureton, dean and campus executive officer at the University of Wisconsin-Richland; and Karen Knox, president of Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. These women will offer insights as to the path they have taken and how they have broken the glass ceiling.

"The uniqueness of this event is that the panel for the program is formed from three women who are leaders at Southwest Wisconsin institutes of higher education: UW-Platteville, UW-Richland and Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. It is very rare to have an area where all of the public educational institutions for higher education have females as lead administrators of the academics and programs; we hope that a panel consisting of these women will inspire and honor the women who attend,"Butts said. Anyone with questions about this event may contact Butts at (608) 342-1261 or buttsc@uwplatt.edu.
