UWP blood drive nationally known

PLATTEVILLE- Because of its pattern of record breaking units donated, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville's blood drive is becoming nationally known.
The 30th blood drive, held Feb. 26 through 28, collected 554 units. Donating a pint of blood has the potential to save three lives. Residence Hall Association strives to make the process comfortable and fun with television, food and prizes. This semester, donors and volunteers enjoyed two full sheet cakes and cookies each day, in celebration of the 30th blood drive. Thirty $30 gift cards to area businesses, 45 T-shirts and two first aid kits were given away in a drawing. The highlight of the event was two guests from the Red Cross, Tony Procaccio, CEO of the Red Cross badger region, and Max Oleson, board of directors member. According to Emily Niebuhr, president of RHA, the two came to see the blood drive and how it was run because of its national reputation.
"It's a big thing for a school our size to get as many units as we do," said Niebuhr.
UWP's blood drive is the largest mobile blood drive in the region. The spring and fall 2007 blood drives broke UWP's record for total units donated.
"Even though we didn't break the record this time, it was pretty successful. We had a lot of fun and we had a lot more things going on," said Niebuhr. "I would like to thank all the donors and volunteers."
The next blood drive is Oct. 28 through 30. The location will be announced at a later date. Walk-ins and appointments are welcome.
