Sigma Phi Epsilon receives four awards

PLATTEVILLE- Leadership, scholastic excellence and community service is what the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter labors for. Because of their efforts, the chapter won four awards during the Carlson Leadership Academy event.

"Receiving the awards gave us a motivational boost. Our members were ready to come back and hit the ground running. It encouraged our members to continue to strive for their best," said Eugene Woehrle, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Sigma Phi Epsilon was awarded the Manpower Excellence Award and the Grand Chapter Scholarship Cup. The Manpower Excellence Award is presented to chapters for being the largest fraternity on campus and having a grade point average above the all-campus G.P.A. The Grand Chapter Scholarship Cup is presented to chapters ranking first in academic standing among all other fraternities on campus for a year. This year, the chapter had an average G.P.A. of 3.21.

Because of the active involvement from alumni, the chapter's Alumni Volunteer Corporation was presented with the Alumni Volunteer Corporation of the Year District 17 award. Only one chapter from each district is recognized for this award. Sigma Phi Epsilon alumni give back to the chapter by providing scholarships and sponsorships to leadership events, academic and career mentoring, student housing support and membership development support.

"Our alumni are always available to answer questions and give us resources. They also help us manage the house and attend our meetings," said Woehrle.

Chris Badtke, chaplain of Sigma Phi Epsilon, received the J. Edward Zollinger Outstanding Senior Award. Only five members in the nation are recognized. The award is based on scholastic achievement, fraternity and campus leadership, and community involvement. In addition to his leadership within Sigma Phi Epsilon, Badtke has also helped Grant County Habitat for Humanity by assisting in builds and teaching other volunteers construction skills.

"It was an amazing feeling. I was glad I could help give that distinction to WI-Theta (our chapter)," said Badtke.

Because of Badtke's award, the chapter is now eligible to select a Zollinger Scholar. This individual must be a sophomore who the chapter believes possesses the same leadership potential as Badtke. The scholar will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship - $500 to be awarded his junior year and $500 awarded his senior year.

In addition to receiving the awards at the Carlson Leadership Academy, members also developed life skills and learned the best ways to lead the chapter. The academy is part of the national Sigma Phi Epsilon Leadership Continuum, a series of leadership opportunities focused on teaching and reinforcing Sigma Phi Epsilon's values of virtue, diligence and brotherly love.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is a social fraternity that focuses on mental, physical, character and leadership development, academic achievement and community service. It is open to all males with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.7.

"Joining SigEp was the best decision I made in college ... I have so many memories and my brothers have been there for me whenever I needed them. It's still awesome to see a lot of the younger brothers grow and become such awesome guys," said Badke.
