Media invited to distinguished lecturer press conference
PLATTEVILLE- All media are invited to a press conference for the University of Wisconsin Platteville's 2008 distinguished lecturer, Herman Boone. The conference will take place April 2 from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the Computer Conference Room in the Pioneer Student Center.
Media and press will have the opportunity to ask questions of Boone as he hand picks them. The press conference is open to media and press only. Following the press conference, from 10 a.m. to noon, Boone will give a presentation to students, faculty, staff and the public in the Williams Fieldhouse on the UWP campus.
Boone is the football coach portrayed by Denzel Washington in the movie, "Remember the Titans." In 1971, three high schools in Alexandria, Va., integrated, forming T.C. Williams High School. The integration caused high racial tensions. These tensions escalated when Boone was named head coach of the integrated Titans football team, outranking Bill Yoast, the former head coach of the white high school. However, the two men overcame prejudice, unified their team and helped the community set aside their intolerance and unite to support their children. The Titans went on to have a perfect season and win the state championship.
