UWP to host 30th blood drive

PLATTEVILLE- All are invited to help save a life by donating blood at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The blood drive, sponsored by the Residence Hall Association, will be held Feb. 26 through 28 in the Mining, Mississippi and University North and South Rooms of the Pioneer Student Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Any healthy individual, 17 years old or older and weighing at least 110 pounds who brings a photo ID, may donate. Appointments are not necessary, but are recommended to cut waiting time.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the UWP blood drive, two large cakes and cookies will be available to volunteers and donors. Thirty $30 gift certificates from various area businesses will also be given away along with T-shirts and first aid kits. In addition, donors may watch television as they complete the approximately one hour donation process.
Last year, the blood drive broke its previous record with 642 units. RHA hopes to top that this year with 650 units. These large numbers have made UWP's blood drive the largest in the region.
"It's a good thing to give back to the community and you can save three lives. It's also fun because you can visit with people," said Emily Niebuhr, RHA president.
For those unable to donate blood, there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities. Those who would like to volunteer can sign up in advance with RHA or come to the blood drive to see where help is needed.
Anyone wanting to make an appointment to donate or wanting more information may visit www.givebloodgivelife.org or contact Niebuhr at (608) 342-1844 or niebuhre@uwplatt.edu.
