'The Trojan Women' puts modern twist on traditional Greek theater

PLATTEVILLE- On Nov. 8 through 10, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Department of Performing and Visual Arts-Theater and the Pioneer Players will present "The Trojan Women" in the Center for the Arts Theater. A special matinee will be performed on Nov. 7 at 11 a.m., while all other performances are at 7:30 p.m.

Translated and adapted by Brendan Kennelly and directed by David Schuler, assistant professor of theater at UWP, "The Trojan Women" is a story about what happens to Trojan women and children after the fall of Troy.

"What's interesting about this production is that the setting is a traditional Greek play in modern times. We're using multimedia to do our best to recreate the middle east of today," said Schuler.

Featuring documentary footage from the Iraq War and authentic Desert Storm uniforms, the play follows the Trojan women and Hecuba, their spiritual leader and widow of King Priam as the Greeks take them away on ships to become trophies. After watching her daughters Cassandra and Andromache be taken, Hecuba attempts to get her revenge on Helen, the wife of Spartan Menelaus, who she blames for Troy's death and destruction.

According to Schuler, the play is designed to get the audience thinking about how humanity solves it's disagreements with war while evaluating what happens to the women and children who are left behind.

This play contains strong language and is not recommended for children. Cost of the play is $7 for general admission, $6 for UWP faculty and staff and $5 for UWP students with a student ID. Tickets can be purchased from the CFA Box Office by calling (608) 342-1298. Anyone wanting more information about the play may contact Schuler at (608) 342-1198 or schulerd@uwplatt.edu.
