Records are broken again at UWP blood drive
Residence Hall Council's blood drive broke its records once again with 642 units, making it the largest blood drive in the region once again.PLATTEVILLE- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville hosted another record-breaking blood drive on Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 at the Pioneer Student Center. Last year's record of 563 units was topped with 642 units, making it the largest mobile blood drive in the region once again.
A total of 647 people donated, and 230 units were drawn on the first day alone. "I was ecstatic. Two hundred and thirty units is huge for one day. The blood drive is a great way to impact and be involved in the community," said Emily Niebuhr, Residence Hall Council president. This year, a new online registration option became available and was quite successful according to Niebuhr.
A perk to donating blood is saving lives. In fact, just one unit of blood has the potential of saving three lives. In addition to this feel-good benefit, donors also enjoy watching television or movies while the approximately one hour process takes place and have a chance to win prizes. This year's prizes included a Nintendo Wii sports package, as well as first aid kits and T-shirts.
People have another opportunity to donate on Feb. 26 through 28, 2008 at the spring blood drive hosted by UWP. Walk-ins and appointments are welcome.
