UWP's fall convocation to include special presentation on the first-year student

PLATTEVILLE - The 2007 University of Wisconsin-Platteville Convocation will be held on Mon., Aug. 27, in the Center for the Arts (CFA). UWP holds an annual convocation to inform the campus community of the previous year's accomplishments and the coming year's goals.

The 2007 convocation will begin with a morning reception from 8 to 8:30 a.m. in the CFA lobby. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the university will introduce the newly hired academic staff and announce recipients of university-wide awards and honors from the past year. Chancellor David Markee will deliver his annual State of the University Address and speak about university goals for the upcoming academic year.

Jean Henscheid, a fellow of the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition, will deliver a presentation entitled "The First-Year Experience and Other Student Transitions: A National Perspective" from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. She is a managing editor of the Jossey-Bass/American College Personnel Association publication "About Campus," and director of the Core Curriculum at the University of Idaho. Henscheid has authored and edited monographs, book chapters and articles on various topics related to the college student experience and conducts workshops across the U.S. and abroad with a primary focus on learning communities, general education, curriculum design and learning assessment. She led learning community programs as well as taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership and research methods at Washington State University and now teaches interdisciplinary first-year courses in the program she directs at the University of Idaho.

Various workshops and programs will be offered in the afternoon about aiding students in making effective transitions to college.
