School of Education invites teachers to enroll in teacher licensure program

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville School of Education invites interested teachers to join its Special Education Cross-Categorical Teacher Licensure Program. This program is open to individuals who currently hold, or are eligible for, a Wisconsin teaching license, and it leads to additional licensure in cross-categorical special education.

This graduate level program is competency-based, rather than coursework-based. The program was established in summer 2001 and created by a team of classroom teachers, Cooperative Educational Services Association (CESA) #3 personnel, school district administrators, Department of Public Instruction staff, UWP faculty, a school counselor and parents.

Those interested in joining the programming will first need to register for Teaching 7610: Portfolio Development and Competency Review, taught in hybrid fashion by Rea Kirk and Julie Phillips. This means that students meet face-to-face once a month and then work independently in between. The course is at the graduate level and will be offered during the fall 2007 term.

Students in the course will meet as a whole group on Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the West Conference Room of CESA #3 in Fennimore. At this meeting, the instructors will explain how to develop a portfolio designed to demonstrate what competencies the student already has in the field of special education. During the remainder of the semester, students work independently building their portfolios. Upon completion, the portfolio will be reviewed by a team, and the results of this review will reveal what courses the student needs to complete to become a highly qualified cross-categorical teacher.

Students who decide to complete a Master of Science in Education (MSE) degree may transfer the credits they earn from the Cross-Categorical Program into the MSE program.

To register, students should call (608) 342-1321 or register online at http://www.uwplatt.edu before Aug. 31.

Anyone with questions about the program may contact Sue Alborn-Yilek, coordinator of the Education Office of Special Programs, at (608) 342-1276 or albornyileks@uwplatt.edu.
