UWP hosts second Tri-State Honors Band Festival
PLATTEVILLE - On Feb. 16 and 17, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Music Department will host the second Tri-State Honors Band Festival. There will be two concerts: the first, on Feb. 16, which will feature the UWP Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Jazz I Ensemble, will begin at 7:30 p.m. The end of the festival will cumulate in another concert on Saturday evening, starting at 7:30 p.m., which will feature the Festival Honors Band. Both concerts will take place in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall, located in the Center for the Arts building on campus.
Talented band students from grades nine through 12, nominated by band directors across the tri-state area, will have the opportunity to study under the direction of UWP faculty, in addition to guest clinician Eugene Migliaro Corporon.
Corporon is director of wind studies, conductor of the wind symphony, and the regents professor of music at the University of North Texas. He has recorded over 600 works, two of which appeared on the Grammy nomination ballot. He has also served as a guest conductor at the Interlochen World Center for Arts Education, Showa Academia Musicae in Atsugi, Japan, and Aspen Music Festival and School, and has previously held the position of president of the College Band Directors National Association. Corporon is as much an educator as a conductor and performer. He is co-author of the series "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band," which emphasizes the importance of comprehensive conceptual learning in the music-making process. Corporon maintains an active guest-conducting schedule and is in demand as a conductor and teacher throughout the world.
In addition to working with the high school students, Corporon will also be offering a clinic for UWP music students and band directors who attend the festival, free of charge. He will be conducting the Festival Honors Band, and will also be guest conducting a piece with the UWP Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Both concerts are free and open to the public.
